BEND, Ore. -- After only 4 1/2 hours of deliberation, a Bend jury imposed the death penalty for a fourth time Thursday afternoon against convicted double-murderer Randy Lee Guzek for his role in the brutal murders of a Terrebonne couple, after three earlier decisions were overturned on appeal over the past 23 years.
People were called back to the courtroom around 2 p.m., 5 1/2 hours after the jury got the case, following closing arguments and final jury instructions from a visiting Lane County judge.

The filing period is open for seats on several local city councils up for election in November.
GRP: Big questions...Is Astoria's Mayor Van Dusen going to meet a serious challenge this election and by Who? Will Warrenton's Gil Gramson be replaced? Will Astoria City Councilor Henningsgaard be unseated?
Prospective candidates have until Aug. 24 to file a declaration of candidacy for the positions, which will appear on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
For candidates filing by petition, it is recommended that nominating petitions be submitted by Aug. 13 to ensure signature verification by the deadline.

At last week's commission meeting, Jay Kiddle and Ted Thomas asked for the resignation of the three of us that lost the election last month. Normally I don't respond to personal attacks during business from the public, but I was not going to sit by and not respond.
