It sppears Sheriff Bergin was awaded for his work on many committtees of the Oregon Sheriff's Association. How does that translate to better law enforcement in Clatsop County?

By reducing crime, arresting drug dealers, and kicking ass!
Not what the dopers and GOBs want though.

A Better observation would be...How did Bergin's recent re-election without any opposition translate to his leadership of the Clatsop County Sheriff's Department and the confidence and support of the citizens of Clatsop County?

I would say that, in part, could be one of the elements that garnered him this significant award and I congratulate him.

thats not a "better question", that's a dumb question

I congratulate Tom too. Just look at all the wonderful things he has done for Clatsop County. His work on the jail over crowding situation is amazing. He has effectively eradicated drugs in the county with his twice a year busts. His part in efforts to close the transition center were well done. His "transfer" of emergency management to the Human Resource Director was a stroke of genius. We continually read about his views on crime and his support of the county police departments. His radio interviews are just great. Josh Marquis not only supports Tom, but considers him a friend. Like the above commentator says, Tom certainly does not do anything the Good Old Boys want him to do, but instead works hard for the some other people. And, he does all this for only $90,000 a year take home pay. Tom Bergin is a smart man. Way to go Tom.

Uh...that's about $50 "take home" pay and the Transition Center is losing $15,000 a MONTH so thank goodness someone is willing to step in.
Those of us who have been here remember Clatsop County in the early 1990s when drug dealing was rampant....a lot less now and a real drug team because of Bergin.
Is says somethign that the Daily A and all the "important peole" supported the man he ran against and Nergin won every single precint in the county.

Ah, so Sheriff Bergin only makes $50 a month take home pay? Wow, he would be a wonderful person if that were true. You are wrong, however, the fact is that he makes over $90,000 a year. The Transition Center is not losing a dollar. It is financed mostly by the State and grants and takes almost nothing from the County. Your figures are just Berginaganda. And, if the county is not still dripping in drugs, why does Bergin still say there is a "tremendous" drug problem and is willing to spend $300.000 a year on it. Sorry, man, you are just one of Bergin's good old boys. Get real. I must agree, the people in Clatsop County got what they deserved when they elected Bergin as Sheriff. They got nothing.

Well, buddy, you ought to take a look at the county budget, salary section. The Sheriff makes lots more than $50k a year. Also, without dabating the source of money for the transition center, do you know of a transition center that breaks even, let along makes money? What? Do you think those criminals go out and make enough money to pay the transition center? You probably think Bergin's jail makes money too, instead, in reality, of losing about $ 3 million a year. And, treatment? Bergin refused to give prisoners treatment. Jeez, next time you call someone an idiot you should at least read up on the facts.

Facts please to confirm your allegations.

Again, Anon, go ASK a a real recovering addict about the "treatment" they got at the Transition Center.
Contrast that with the VERY public comments made at the Meth Summitt a few years back where recovereing addict after another got up and personally thanked Bergin for saving their lives...no-one else....

Alright Patrick and Anon-for-Bergin, if you want to believe Tom Bergin has done all he can for the people who elected him, in your minds it is then true and there is no point in further argument here. Bergin is lucky to have friends like you.

Friend or no friend, you have any "Facts" to the contrary to specifically point-out Sheriff Bergin's failure to do what he was elected to do, bring them forward please, as asked a couple of posts ago.

There are people upset at Bergin.
The few people who made a farce of the Trabsition Center.
Drug dealers who got away with what they did over and over again and now get arrested.....

Yeah, that would be the Tricky Ricky Lee county commission, now down to one, that put up the money out of their little special projects fund to get that facility built without the approval of anybody but themselves and just because they could.

The closure of the Transition Center is a significant loss to Clatsop County. If the citizens of this county were better educated they would have seen value and requested it not be closed. What you may not realize is with the centers closure all those offenders will be living on the streets most likely engaging in criminal behavior. Yeah I guess drugs can and from what I'm told sometimes make there way into the Transition Center but I also have first hand knowledge of drugs making there way into the jail. Those stories however never get published. So to those who don't think this county operates on the good old boy system...think again.
