Tom Bergin

Jim Pierce for sure. We can't have four more years of Bergin's do nothing approach to earning $107,000 a year (oh, except for him chopping wood during a disaster instead of organizing the response).

Bill Fuzia has the background, education and experience. He is an honest, decent guy and won't be a puppet for the D.A. Bill Fuzia has my vote!

John J said...

Bill Fizia sure has qualifications like a masters, being a captain in the army and a retired deputy. He would be able to reorganize CCSO so it actually did law enforcement instead of politics.

Kirby said...

Bill Fuzia, an honest man who will be a "Working Sheriff" not a politician.

Bill Buckley said...

It is a difficult choice because Pierce and Fuzia are both well qualified in different ways. The good part is that either/ both would be so much better than the Tom Bergin/Josh Marquis brotherhood. Bergin has done almost nothing in six years but collect his incredible salary and Marquis has been his lawyer. I'd say a vote for either Pierce or Fuzia is a vote in the right direction.

Looks like we got that Bradwood Landing crowd of stomped-down-Ron Paul-Leaning-Libertarian-Phony Republican-Marquis/Bergin haters trying to stuff the mail-in ballots with their own handful of hopeful wannabes don't it?

Even including, how familiar that is, another Tort Claim "Bullying Tactic"?

Anonymous said...

What?
Is this where Patrick tells Oley to prove the tort claim is just a bullying tactic? That would be really interesting since only a very select few, and those are in government, should know what the complaint is about.

Definately Pierce for Sheriff. Time for a change.

Well, I would like to hear a bit more on this alleged collusion to oust Bergin and the "Tort Claim" issue was already covered by The Daily "A". You do read the Daily "A" don't you "Anonym"?

Anonymous said...

All we read in the Daily A was that a tort claim was filed against the sheriff aledging that he created a hostile work environment. That seemed less like a political issue and more like a management problem and, potentially, a criminal one.
We must have missed the parts that explained who made the complaint, the basis for the complaint, what hostile work environment means in this context, what other employees may be affected and who will be conducting the internal investigation (although the sheriff's quote indicated that he will be conducting it).
I suppose then, since the news report was complete, we just missed those other parts, Olney must be correct that the tort claim is only political bullying. We did not miss the part where DA Marquis is quoted as saying the legal process of a tort claim "means nothing" (although that comment seems unusual coming from a government lawyer and begs the questions why Marquis would get involved in this internal but possibly criminal case at this time, unless Bergin is Marquis' client).
Thanks once again Patrick for setting the record straight.

Anonymous said...

My vote goes to Bill Fuzia, nice to hear him say nothing bad about the others.

Anonymous said...

The DA - who is the county's chief law officer - didn't comment on the obviously politically timed notification. He explained that a "tort claims notice" doesn't require any proof or anything. It is simply required IF you later want to have the ability to sue the government.
The DA does not represent the Sheriff, County Counsel does.
Marquis has obviously backed Bergin, so we know where he stands.
Pierce is a really nice guy and a good cop, ask people in Seaside about Barnett, Nelson was passed over for sergeant, and Fuzia is already on PERS. He looks great in a uniform but his long-time assignment was relating to trees as the Forest Patrol Deputy.
A good policeman does not necessarily make a good sheriff. There are other qualities.

"Setting the record straight"?

Would that be your opinion or "Oley's" opinion that did it "Anonym"?

I would think, in the end, we will find that "Oley's" viewpoint may just be more accurate than you give him/her credit for.

Seems that "Tort Claim" threat has been wielded previously at County to attempt to leverage a position hasn't it and what a perfect time to target a candidate with the prospect eh?

Fuzia's the man we need! He is the most qualified of any of the candidates and the only one who understands the full implications of the NDAA.

Anonymous said...

An earlier post stated that A good policeman does not necessarily make a good Sheriff. There are other qualities. I agree with that 100% . Honesty as well as integrity should be traits we expect to see in our Sheriff. Yes, Fuzia is on PERS and those benefits stop if he is elected Sheriff. Bergin, Pierce & Nelson are also PERS eligible. Barnett is PARS. And, mentioning PERS was totally irrelevant, anyway. I guess if you want to look at long time job assignments, then Bergin is an expert on drugs and little else. Bill Fuzia is the real deal and without a doubt the best choice for Sheriff.

Anonymous said...

I plan to vote for Jim Pierce. He has been an effective force in our community for years and would do well as sheriff. In addition, he would be his own man and do what is right instead of as now what is political.
I also don't see why anyone would consider Tom Bergin and "expert" on drugs. Bergin had nothing more to do with drugs than a regular deputy until a couple of years before his election to sheriff. During that time he did not "run" the drug task force as he claims. During those salad days when everyone, including US Customs and the Postal Inspector was on the task force, it was run by the Oregon State Police Station Commander due to a decision by all the law enforcement agency heads in the county. Bergin was just a sergeant on the task force and did some scheduling, just like the OSP sergeant who preceded him. When the task force was reassigned to the sheriff's office and Undersheriff Dan Laughman was put in charge, all the members but Seaside police and CCSO left the task force, leaving the team as it is now with only two departments participating. Also during that few years, Bergin simply worked narcotics cases just like the other cops on the team.
Once elected sheriff, Bergin did done nothing to increase or improve drug enforcement in the county, except whine about Astoria not being on the team.
The fact is, Bergin is not a "drug expert" or even an expert in anything.

I'm voting for Jim Pierce.
But, what's the deal with this "poll". It is quite different than the usual Patrick "poll" and it is quickly sliding off the page.
Could it be that the responses do not correspond to the positive Tom Bergin vote that Patrick wanted/expected?
Interesting that this is the same thing that is happening on DA Josh Marquis' website (albeit much quicker since Josh's website is seldom visited, even by him).
Ummm, does Oley (Sheriff Bergin) have something to do with this??

James said...

Bergin WAS the chief of the Drug Unit
He is the ONLY candidate with actual supervisory experience and who has managed multi-million dollar budgets through the county budget process.
Patrick has posted the OreStar accounts of candidates,
It is very distressing that several of the "challengers" clearly hoping to score a "retirement job" with no real experience are NOT reporting their contributions and expenditures as required.

Anonymous said...

Sorry James, during the heyday of the drug task force Bergin was a sergeant and did what first level supervisors do. The "chief", if you wish that term, of the task force was OSP Lieutenant Duane Stanton. Stanton was responsible for task force operations and finances. Bergin worked for him. Stanton was a member of the task force board, which was the police chiefs and sheriff and they approved major decisions. I know Bergin has said he "ran" the task force, but it simply is not true for that time.
Now, when the task force was moved to the sheriff's office and most of the members dropped out, Chief Deputy Dan Laughman was put in charge. Laughman seems to have pretty much delegated all his responsibility to Bergin to manage the three task force members, which simply means that Laughman did not do his job, not that Bergin was responsible for the task force.

Also, you think being an Army Captain is not actual supervisory experience? Let's see, a Captain is responsible for abut 200 officers and men. Seems like supervisory experience to me. Also, the Captain is responsible for all the money allocated to run a company, which is about the same as the sherff. While the Captain has some strict rules to follow in handling that money, can we assume the sheriff must follow county guidelines and doesn't get to spend and spend and spend?

While Bergin apparently just fooled around in college never getting enough credits in the right subjects to get a degree, Bill Fuzia did not waste his time and money. He got both a bachelors and a masters. Education is one of the three traits of a professional and Fuzia has all three, education, training and experience. Bergin has one, experience, and that is from sitting in his chair, chopping some wood, visiting Salem a lot and, yes, apparently from his website, trying to return to his rodeo days.

Its this kind of crap coming from the Bergin camp about how great he is but giving no truthful substance that makes me vote for Bill Fuzia.
Besides the fact that Bergin has done almost nothing to improve safety in Clatsop County in the last six years.

Kirby said...

Lets not forget Bill has promised to return the $13,770 salary increase and not accept any other increases while in office. I its easy for Bergin to ask the voters for 8 cents a day or "two beer cans off the side of the road" to fund his new jail when he's getting over $107k per year.

Anonymous said...

No wonder Fuzia can afford to say he'll give back $13,700 as he'll be triple dipping. (Military retirement, PERS, Sheriff pay). Pierce and Barnett will be double dipping. Bergin has worked hard for this county as Sheriff and he won't be double dipping. I stand proudly behind Tom and his great leadership skills.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous @940pm. check your rules about PERS if Fuzia or Pierce gets in.

Anonymous said...

Bergin, great leadership skills? You must be kidding. Who does he lead, wood choppers? Please describe in great detail how Bergin has exercised his "great leadership skills" over the past six year he has been the elected sheriff. It should be amazing.

Marc said...

A bunch of "double" and "triple" dipping retirees, some boasting skeepskins versus one still active, still young, hard working, willing to get down in the trenches with his men and women deputies, incumbent Sheriff, State leader of Oregon Sheriffs Association whose jail expansion concept is on the ballot in this election as well and some anonymous nut job wants examples of his leadership.

I just put my ballot in the drop box two days ago and didn't hesitate to mark Bergin's oval when I was filling it out and proud to do so.

Anonymous said...

Well, we get the law enforcement we deserve. If we want only what we have, what is not much, Bergin may actually be able to keep it up for the next four years.
But, if you have been or know a victim and you want something better, vote for anyone but Bergin.

Anonymous said...

I don't know how you click the clicker on this, but please make my vote for Jim Pierce.

Anonymous said...

Marc, Don't be ignorant. None of the 5 candidates will be double dipping or triple dipping if elected. You are making an assumption based on zero facts.

Anonymous said...

Patrick,
I have tried to use your other poll on the Sheriff's election and can't seem to make it work. But, if you are keeping count based on the poll here, your other poll seems inaccurate. The count I get from here is
Bergin 4
Pierce 6
Nelson 0
Fuzia 6
Just thought you'd like to know.

The idea that he don't want a sheriff that works for the DA elected 5 times sounds like a bad idea. If you think the City should try DUIIs and want a return to the "good old days" of the late 80s or early 90s then don't vote for Bergin.
I will, as so are my neighbors.

Anonymous said...

Bergin has something to do with the prosecution of DUIIs in Astoria? I didn't know that. I have to wonder how he has the time and how he has the right. Is this something DA Marquis told him to do?

Anonymous said...

No, the Sheriff, being the only other county-wide elected official (other than the judges) has attended all the meetings between the DA and the City and has stood by the DA.
I, and many in Astoria, applaud the Sheriff for his courage, when the safe thing is fall in with the "good old boy club" that dominates city politics and FORMERLY dominated county politics.

Anonymous said...

ooo, yeah. Bergin really has to be courageous to face the Astoria City Council. What does he have to worry about, getting a bad Pepsi? Come on, Bergin has not done any risky things since being elected, none, none period. Standing by Josh Marquis is standing by a fool, but who cares?

Anonymous said...

Actually, Bergin has not done anything to improve the safety of people in Clatsop County except get a state representative to sponsor a bill to cut some trees close to the road. Plus, after eight years
in office, at $107,000 a year he has removed one option for handling criminals without actually dealing with the problems of the jail and drugs that got him elected in the first place. What a guy! Oh yeah, he has set in a chair next to Marquis and cheered him on. This is what we want as a sheriff?
I am voting for Fuzia.

Anonymous said...

You must be talking about the great Transtion center, which was an unqualified failure, and burned through hundreds of thousands of dollars in county money when it failed to attract all the inmates with money to stay out of the jail.
There were many walkaways and even for staff holding booze parties after hours.
One of the most important qualities in a sheriff, or any elected executive, is the ability to work with others. Marquis is the DA until you elect another one, just as this County Commission is in control unless you un-elect them.
Only one candidate has shown skill and experience in dealing with his fellow elected officials - Tom Bergin. The others are just hoping to score a cushy retirement job.

Anonymous said...

No, actually I am talking about the Transition Center that was funded over 50% by the state and 20% by the feds that Bergin did away with simply because he could not get along with Cora Lane.
The last time a DA tried to get cozy with a law enforcement administrator she went to jail Obviously, Bergin is not up to that. He has let lots get by.
You are right, however. Only one candidate has shown experience in kissing the ass of politicians and that candidate is Tom Bergin.
Clatsop County will get the Sheriff we deserve. It will be interesting to see what we deserve this time.

Anonymous said...

So the DA is going to jail?
The Transition Center was funded by the county and used the state money supposed yo use SB 1145 offenders. If you don't know what an SB 1145 offender is, then you really don't know what your are talking about

Anonymous said...

I keep seeing posts saying that Tom Bergin is a do nothing Sheriff yet in the same breath everything he has ever done is being criticized. Leaders make hard decisions that they feel is for the best and not everyone is going to like their decisions. But that is why they are in that position. A couple of the people here don't seem to understand a chain of command and complain about everything because they don't like it. A true leader can't and shouldn't please everyone. For those who want that position as Sheriff, I am curious how you will please everyone. I really don't want a Sheriff who is going to bend to everyones whim. I want a Sheriff who makes his best decision and stands behind it. I support Tom Bergin for Sheriff.

Anonymous said...

I would love to crtitize what Sheriff Tom Bergin has done. Could someone tell me what that is? Bergin has chopped some trees during a flood, he has convinced some state legislator to sponsor a bill that cuts even more trees back from the road, exposing the clear cuts and he has raised his hand to be the OSSA President. Anything for us? In the last eight years he has collected ofer $100,000 a year and that is it. Has he delt with the perceived jail problem in the last 8 years? No. Has he convinced the other cities in Clatsop County that they need to support his drug unit? No, Gearhart, Warrenton and Astoria do not have officers on the unit. Has he created any new programs that John Raichl did not already do or that are not riding of the coat tails of the cities (like the Astoria mobile data terminials or the Seaside citizen police academy)? No.
The elected sheriff is suposed to be leader able to cut through the politics and help increase the safety of the county.
What has Bergin done to that aim? Nothing.
I will agree that Bergin can tell dump jokes at Rotary.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, that should be dumb jokes

Anonymous said...

Tom Bergin gets my vote. He has done a great job for Clatsop County and will continue to do so. After hearing the debates, I can't imagine voting for anyone else. He has and always has had the citizens of Clatsop County first on his agenda. He truly has our interests at heart.

Anonymous said...

My vote goes to Jim Pierce. He is a wonderful man who has served us very well for a long time. He has the intelligence and motivation to be a good sheriff who will be constantly working for us and leting us know what he is doing.

Anonymous said...

What's the deal with the Bergin signs? I see a Pierce or Fuzia or Nelson or Barnett sign and, pretty soon, I see a Bergin sign right next to them. I know that in his last real election Bergin whined to the property owners that had DuPree signs to get them to let him put up a sign to. Did he do the same thing this time? That seems really low rent.

Tom T. said...

Jim Pierce? "Intelligence and motivation to be a "Good Sheriff" when he, along with another candidate, takes campaign contributions from a known, multiple convictions felon?

Tom T. said...

Campaign signs next to each other?
Why not, especially in a public right of way you silly puff.

What's "Low Rent" is you even bringing it up.

You must be a member of the same campaign machine as Barnett and Pierce.

Looks to me you have figured out a way to manipulate McGee's poll in favor of Pierce huh? Now that's "Low Rent" too.

Shame on you!

Anonymous said...

TOM BERGIN GETS MY VOTE! He really cares about the citizens of Clatsop County. Of course he helped chop trees during a flood. He saw a need and he filled it. That is just like Tom, he is not afraid to jump in any help the residents with whatever comes up. I am proud to know such a hard working,
dedicated individual.

Anonymous said...

Ah Tom?
It's illegal to put campaign signs in the public right of way.

Also, read above, McGee got a poll that can't be fixed.
But, since you want to talk about Bergin's "greatness" how about telling us why Bergin, representing the Oregon Sheriffs, came down hard on shutting down marijuana dispensaries, but here in Clatsop County, where he is supposed to be Sheriff, we still have four of them? Sounds like Bergin can't walk his talk, except by chopping wood that is (did he actually campaign on that?).
My bet is that Bergin cares about Clatsop County to get degree afforded by his $107,000 a year and a really soft desk chair.

Patrick McGee said...

Sorry, it appears, now that the question has arisen, this poll is no better or worse than the rest and I was wrong in my own assessment that it was tamper-proof.

Looks as though we will have to rely on our own honor in voting just once and not cheating afterall.

Anonymous said...

Ok, Patrick. We know you did your best.
And, that Tom thinks Bergin can put signs in the public right of way is probably his best too. Now, if we could just find a sheriff that did his best, for an incredible amount of money a year.

Anonymous said...

Sorry but Barnett the scofflaw has
more illegal signs up than anyone, with Fuzia and Nelson next.
