West Coast Short Sea Shipping Scuttled By Unions?

This article was published in the Winter 2010 issue of the Coast Longshore Division Newsletter.

GRP;Is this why our own Port of Astoria sandbagged on the potential of our own participation in this industry when it was available to us?

NON-UNION CARGO: Short sea shipping barges on the Duwamish River (shown here) and the Columbia transport cargo loaded by non-union dockworkers.
Most longshore workers, particularly those of us registered in small ports, have heard the rhetoric associated with short sea shipping (SSS), sometimes referred to as marine highways.
The United States government and many small public port authorities are championing the concept of SSS. Why?

The United States government wants to undermine our position in the cargo transportation industry.

Ports want a piece of the free money that the current administration is irresponsibly throwing around.

Wannabe freight moving entrepreneurs and underutilized ports are telling all of us up and down the West Coast that there are jobs in it for us and our communities......Read Full Article

Astoria is and always has been a staunch supporter of union labor. We will not tolerate scabs in our port. Period.

The ILWU is the best union in the country and we are proud of it and will always stand by them in their stance that an injury to one is an injury to all

So, who are you?

Are you speaking on behalf of ILWU in your veiled implication that bodily harm will come to those, no matter how desperqate we are for good, sustainable jobs here in our community and at our port, who should choose not to be union?

Are you an ILWU member?

What, I wonder, if there were a movement afoot to make Port of Astoria a non-union port facility?

They can do that can they not?

How many ILWU workers are working for the log exporting operation now and what specifically is their function?

Union then, union now, union FOREVER.

There will NEVER be a movement afoot to make the POA(which is really a subsidary of the Port Of Portland)anything even remotely resembling a union port. It's glaringly obvious you know nothing about the history of this town and it's workforce.

Mr. McGee,
Please explain where Anonymous implicated that bodily injury would come to anyone. I think Anom's comments are about supporting our union workforce. An movement against one is a movement against all. That is my opinion.

Go on down to the hall and ask them yourself. While you're at it, go ahead and spew your non union port bullshit. I'm sure they'll really be interested in what you have to say.

So you two (Anonymous 11:11 and Brian)are saying ILWU was not against the Short Sea Shipping proposal and its many jobs that fell right off Port radar without the least effort to explore its potential?

Mr.McGee, Read my previous post again. I asked you a question. Next, I gave my interpretation of Anom's post as I understand it. I did not indicate if I agreed or disagreed with with his comment. I should have used "interpretation" instead of "opinion" in the last sentence. Now, Please explain where Anom's post implicated bodily injury would come to anyone. I am having trouble finding it.

Of course the ILWU would vehemently oppose non union labor at the port and this community, as always, would stand with them 110%. Anyone who tried to encourage or promote it would only be looking for a trouble.
